We visited the restaurant and got to choose our own seafood. We picked two scallops with a side of sweet potato fries and salad. The restaurant was a little small so there was a wait. The scallops could have used more of a coating on the exterior but they weren't bad - a nice balance. The sweet potato fries were a little chewy and I didn't really like how crispy the french fries were. Overall I was satisfied with the food and would get again.
So I have been wanting to try here the whole time and finally decided to give it a shot. I didn't really know what to expect, so I went with a couple things and they had great service and great food! We were sat at the bar and as soon as we were seated the waiter said that our drinks were ready, so I decided to ask for the scallops because I like a lot of scallops. I got the half scallop with shrimp and was able to finish a half scallop in less than 10 minutes. The shrimp was fresh and we had a good -

What an experience! This was my first time to Astoria Seafood and it lived up to all of my expectations. We went around 6PM on a Thursday night, it was busy but not too crowded when we arrived. We did not have to wait more than a few minutes for a table after ordering our food -this was definitely a great time to come because it got exponentially busier as the night went on (line out the door).
We hand picked in bags what we wanted from a large selection of raw seafood - we decided on scallops, calamari, shrimp and clams. You bring your selections up to the register and tell them how you would like each specific item prepared. There is also a large selection of premade side dishes and salads. We got the Greek salad, garlic bread & spinach pie - all delicious!
The food comes out in waves as it's ready, which was nice because everything was served fresh & hot. Every item we got was delicious. Great service, food, and atmosphere. And it's BYOB which is a nice plus.
I would definitely recommend coming in on the early side to avoid a long wait time. Can't wait to come back! -

Was looking for a place to eat while I was getting my car serviced on 21st street, and stumbled across this gem. When you walk in, it looks like a buffet with a bunch of pre-made food options with a casual seating area, but as you walk to the back, there's an array of fish and assorted seafood on ice, similar to a fish market.
So the concept here is, either you choose the premade option, or go to the back and choose your own seafood, which the kitchen will make for you on the spot.
So me and my family chose the fresh seafood option, and opted for salmon, branzino, calamari, and shrimp.
They prepared the salmon and branzino grilled, with tonsssss of fresh garlic, lemon, and parsley, the calamari was fried to perfection, and the shrimp was made with butter and garlic.
The waiter also brings along this fresh garlic bread to go with the sit down service.
I do not have enough good things to say about this place, the seafood is so fresh I felt like the fish swam right over to our table - DEFINITELY visit this place! Friendly, clean, and most importantly DELICIOUS!!! -

Can't believe I've missed out on this place for so long. There's nothing better than picking your own seafood to be cooked your way and delivered to your table. Head to the back and bag your variety of seafood: lots of fish variety, clams, squid, crab, scallops, octopus, shrimp. Then when you pay you can choose how they cook your order: basically fried or grilled. Pick your sides of Greek salad, garlic bread, lemon potatoes, etc, to finish the ordering.
Highly recommend the grilled scallops and fried calamari; I could eat those everyday. The grilled seasoning and predominant olive oil they use to cook things is basic, but absolutely delicious.
We showed up at opening lunch on a weekday with no table wait. Peak times (weekend dinner) I've heard are the worst so avoid if you are starving and don't want to wait. You're not coming to this place for ambiance, its plastic utensils, or rowdiness at times (seem some videos from friends); just get your seafood and chow down. -

For a long time, I didn't want to write a review about this place. This isn't a spot for just anyone, it takes a special kind of love for seafood and tolerance of a potentially chaotic environment. It's even really debatable if they're an actual restaurant or a seafood market gone rogue. Either way, I say there is literally nothing like Astoria Seafood anywhere. That's precisely why I love it.
The premise is very simple:
1 - Walk in and head to the back where all the fish are on display.
2 - Pick some seafood (look at the eyes for the fish) and put in a plastic bag.
3 - Tell the person at the counter what you want to do with the fresh catch: grill it, fry it, etc.
4 - Look at the hot foods section. Get some rice, salad, potatoes, etc.
5 - Figure out a place to sit down, if they let you.
Review or not, it's clear that people have found out. Hordes of folks line up at the door on any given night and they somehow manage to do it without greeting anyone at the door or have a real wait staff to sit folks down. Hell, all of their utensils are plastic, there is no restaurant sign and the place is BYOB.
There are so many things I love to eat here that I couldn't possibly list them all. However, there's a few things I get here almost every time if I can:
* Scallops (grilled)
* Salmon (grilled)
* Calamari (fried / grilled)
* Seafood Rice
* Octopus (grilled)
* Shrimp / Tiger Shrimp (grilled)
* A "small" Greek Salad.
Holding the fort down is Kostas, the 2nd generation Greek owner of the joint. He's like a president of sorts; shaking hands with customers, kissing babies, and kicking butt. His staff is among the hardest working folks out there. And when it comes to cooking, they sure know how to season their food. They do so, all while Greek music blasts away in the background.
I would tell everyone to come here at off hours so they don't have to wait. Finding a group table here is a test of will and patience. Sometimes the service staff may seem rude by rushing you or yelling at you, but that's just their way of saying they love you. Tips are meant for the jar on the counter, not the table. Bring your own beverages and they'll bring a bucket of ice for you.
This place is awesome. Bookmark it and go before everyone else does.
Here's looking at you, review #3,600.
